I have spent most of the morning going through Saint Martin’s course catalog and trying to choose I am going to major in. If I don’t make up my mind soon, I will have a lot of catching up to do. My three top choices are Theatre Arts, English, and Music. My Dad pretty much told me to major in English, because he thinks that it will look much better on a resume than a major in Theatre. Which is probably true. I have had several professors tell me that it doesn’t matter what your Bachelor’s is in, as long as you had one, but my Dad says it isn’t true. I’m not sure who to believe, since I respect both my parents and my professors.
I agree that a major in English would probably be smarter, but I still want to do theatre and music. I think that my dream BA would be a double major in English and Theatre, and a minor in music. I am not sure if that is doable in four years, I am going to go over the credits required and see if it’s possible. If all else fails I’d at least like to double minor in both music and theatre. I’m already about halfway there for both of them, but what I’m worried about is English. I think I can manage it and my gen ed requirements, but I need to check the hours required.
I know my voice teacher will be upset, but to be quite honest I do not want to take elementary ed. I would love to be a college professor, that’s the level I would teach at if I could. This requires a masters, probably working on a doctorate. I would love to stay in school for the rest of my life if I could manage it, I just wouldn’t know how to pay for it. Perhaps working at a university would be the answer. I would love to work at a university, constantly learning, teaching, helping others grow.
I’ve always liked the idea of teaching, I just want to do it at an upper level.
I’m also still interested in graphic design, and costume design, but those aren’t really offered here. I’m kind of looking at them as future hobbies, i don’t know.
I’m also pretty interested in broadcast journalism, so I think the English and theatre would be helpful there.
My problem is there are so many things I am interested in that it is hard to choose.
I look at all of these people around me who have been mapping out their futures for years, never swerving from what they originally planned to do. It baffles me how they have never been distracted, never doubted their ‘calling’ if you will.. . Or perhaps they have, and I just cannot see it.
I am going to go over all of the credits and see if I can manage a double major. Then I would be doing what I want, but also my degree would be a little more realistic for finding a job. (I hate being realistic. I wish I could live in my own fiction.)
I love being at college, but I am scared that when I graduate I won’t be able to go off on my own because of my school loans.
I’m really hoping this Indian tribe works out, because I need all the help I can get.
As a rule I’m against affirmative action, I think it’s really stupid, but I am willing to take anything I can get (financially). A tad hypocritical, I know, but at this point it isn’t worth taking a stand (for me.). I will never be the story book hero, I’ve inherited my father’s practical mind (but my mother’s stubborn attitude). yay me.
Hoping your schooling is a lot more structured and decisive than mine,
Sincerely,
Emilie
