I would like to preface this with saying I absolutely love my new dorm and am very lucky to be living it.
So yesterday we finished up RA training with some crewing on Lake Union. I had an absolute blast, and would totally do it again.
Then we got back here to SMU–and that is when things became slightly less fun.
When I moved in last Thursday, we moved into my room in Baran (the Freshman Residence Hall) but I was told not to get too comfortable.
I was like….ok
So then I just left everything in boxes and packed a bag for the RA retreat.
That evening I got told by A (it was supposed to be a surprise but I had already been told) that I was now a Parsons RA, and that I would most likely be on the 2nd floor. Which part of it is the healthy living community. I asked him if that meant I had to work out (I’m going to anyways) and he said yes. T told me no, though.
So when we came back from the retreat we went to get our room keys so we (the Parsons RAs) could move in. Parsons had just been finished, which is why we couldn’t move in before then.
So I got my room number (225) and key. Then it was time to move.
I thought it would be a great idea to use the rolling flatbed and put all of my stuff on that, cut down loads so to speak. Well, it would have been a great idea if C hadn’t of gone and loaded it up while we were all getting keys and then getting his key after.
I was a little mad,
.
So I decided to just start, and C helped me. We took about 5 trips by hand, carrying giant awkward boxes that were really heavy, until C finally finished.
Then I loaded up the cart with almost everything, and headed over. When I got to Parsons, I was having trouble navigating the cart…I accidentally hit the wall on gouged a reasonable hole in it. The best part? My RD, T was standing right there. His words? “Well, it won’t be new forever”
I guess I can go down in history as the first person to damage Parsons.
It took two and a half more cart trips, and about two hours after the process began, all of my stuff was up in my room.
By this time I was exhausted and sore, but I now had to put my room together.
I put on some good tunes, and got to work. An hour or so later I had my bed made, my shoes up, and huge piles of stuff everywhere.
Then A and S knocked on my door telling me pizza was almost here so we went down to the … big room?
We watched some more of the Olympics (we’ve been watching them all weekend) and ate pizza. We were all sti8ll so ravenous from the crewing and the moving that T ordered two more. Once we ate those, it was time to get back to my room.
I worked until 12 pm, and I got really close to being done. But by then it was time to sleep.
Now because T still had a lot of stuff to move, he told us to take today off until 1pm.
So I was planning on sleeping until around 9:30 or 10:00.
Not so much.
I got a phone call at 7:20 from Dad saying he was here with my bike and tv, and to come let him in. So I put on a sweatshirt (in lieu of changing out of my pajamas) and went down the stairs. I locked up my bike and then went to open the back door to let Dad in. I passed my card in front of the reader, the light turned green acknowledging access, and then the door stayed shut. I tried it a couple more times to make sure.
Then I walked to the next door, and the next.
I ended up having to use my RA key to let me into the front door.
Thinking I was scott free I started to head towards my wing.
Unfortunately, I forgot one little fact, that there was a card reader inbetween the lobby and the hall. And of course it still wasn’t working.
Desperate, I headed to the other side, hoping that for some reason my card would magically work. And for some reason, it did.
So then I rushed back outside (in the proper wing this time) and went to open the door for my Dad only to see that someone else was letting him in.
The only conclusion I can come to ois that my key is still keyed for Baran, so during non-visit hours I cannot get into Parsons. (7:30 is when those end I think.)
So I should get that fixed.
So…
After that I didn’t think I would be able to fall asleep, so I took a shower.
Well I went into the brand new beautiful shower, and turned the water on as hot as it could go.
And I waited. and waited. and waited.
Finally I resolved to just get on with everything else first, like my face and teeth, and shaving.
When I finally had to rinse the shampoo out, I got under the water and it started to warm up. By the time all the soap was gone the water was fairly warm.
So all in all everything worked out, with just a few stumbles on the way. I thought I couldn’t go back to sleep but I am feeling now that I can.
So good luck,
and I hope you are having a lovely day!
Sincrely,
Emilie
