“…and we’re off!”

So yesterday was Freshman move in day.

I got back to SMU at around 8 am, along with J and K. I walked into the office, to ask for directions on what to do. No one seemed to know. I followed a couple of RA’s out into the tent in the parking lot behind Spangler. There were so many RA’s that the lady in charge was like “I don’t need all of you.” So then S and I went over to Parsons to work over there. When we got there, C, another RA, came over and told me I needed to be walking the halls in Baran to welcome Freshman. So I headed over there. Only to find that about six RAs were already doing that,so I went back to the office.

The RD’s didn’t know where to send us, so I saw my friend J who works there and asked if he needed any help with anything. Now, two days ago we had spent about three hours putting frisbees and mugs into EVERYONE’S rooms in Parsons. Unfortunately, there were still three other buildings to do.

So J was like, yeah you can help with the gifts again. So we started to tackle that job….about fifteen minutes later another RA who had nothing to do decided to tag along with us,  and ‘help’. Her helping generally consisted of getting in the way, making weird comments, and complaining. We weren’t able to ditch her until we were almost done.

So once that building was finished, we went off to find different tasks. I headed off to my room to print up an agenda for my first floor (hall) meeting that was to follow later that evening.

Then I helped K (my ex-roomie) move some of her stuff that she had dropped off early out of my room into hers.

Once I was done with that I headed out to the Parsons check in tent, and relieved A from checking in Freshmen.

And then….”let the rain come down”

and down

and down.

Finally coming to our rescue, the PROS staff brought over a tent to put over out table. Unfortunately, I was stationed right by the gap in between the two tents. So there was a lake of water forming right by all of our paperwork.

Then the rain cleared up a little, and the students slowed down. The move in crew started to get a little restless. Father B and I were shivering.

Right when everyone’s energy was fading, the Red Bull car drove in. You should of seen the faces of all of the college students light up when they ran up to grab an ice cold red bull out of the back.

On the car’s way out they gave us a small cardboard crate of Red Bull for the check in table.

I was a little too scared to try the Red Bull, (I’m a chicken and I’m scared of energy drinks) but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

We had about an hour to go, and shortly after that our lunch showed up (sandwiched from Meconi’s) and those gave me the burst I needed to finish. (Since the rain had come back).

When we shut down I hurried back to the shower (intending to take a scalding hot one) but the water didn’t get warm. So after that failed I rushed back into my room, put on sweats, socks, sweatshirt, and I made some hot tea. Eventually I warmed up.

Then I started working on the outline for my floor meeting again and I was almost done when I got a phone call. “Hi, this is J from Res Life, would you mind helping me with the lovely job of frisbees and mugs again?” So I was like….sure.

We did all of Spangler in a couple of hours.

Now all that is left is Burton…but I do NOT want to do Burton. Somebody else can since I helped with every other building.

The evening I had my first floor (hall) meeting and it went over really well.

The girls were generally pretty attentive (except the Soul Patrol Reincarnated) and they seemed to be pretty fun and nice.

I know the AIE girls have no clue what I was talking about. I talked to them afterwards asking if they understood….they just smiled and nodded. I told them I didn’t think they were getting it, they smiled and nodded. I asked them if they had questions, they smiled and nodded.

GAH.

So I am going to have to work on communicating with them.

That’s it for now.

Sincerely,

Emilie
